The 5 Hindrances to self-mastery. Shi Heng Yi…A Ted Talk

Photo by Wouter de Jong on Pexels.com

I’ve been without a remote for a few days. Thus, I’ve been watching a lot of YouTube. Mainly talks and exercises by Shi Heng Yi. The videos just keep playing one after another, after.. It’s a new path for me. But like all spiritual paths, it can and will help you if you apply it. As I’ve said before, All spiritual efforts lead to one place-GOD. I believe, take the tools that resonate best with you and mix and match them for your own spiritual success or as they say in 2021-Your own Self Mastery. Everyone is different. Take what works for you and Use it. The main thing to do is to do whatever it is. Don’t just read about it.

Much of the info I wrote out is from Shi Heng Yi and some is the authors own thoughts. Just want to let you know that ahead of time. Because Yi does mention, he isn’t going to show you the way, just give suggestions. Thus I added on some decent definition to help you out. If you want just Yi’s information the video is down below

When you see more clear. Human interactions become easier. Goals and Inspirations become easier to attain

Find a Way to get to do the things you like to do

Clarity: You see more clear, You feel more clear, you can decide for yourself what to do to reach your goals and aspirations

There are two mistakes along the way to Self-Mastery: Not starting it and not going all the way

The Shaolin Temple Europe labels 5 states of mind that you don’t want to be in, which are the 5 hindrances. Being in any of these 5 states makes it difficult to find your way

The 5 Hindrances

  1. SENSUAL DESIRE: A Positive emotion that can appear through the 5 senses. Seeing, Hearing, Smelling, Tasting, & Feeling. These can be good for a while. But once you follow the temptation too many times and want to stay too long in this area, it becomes an Obsession, which is bad. It’s hard to find clarity by staying to0 long in Sensual Desire. Stay for a bit then get out. Like 2 drinks in a night might be ok, but becoming a hardcore alcoholic is not what you want to do
  2. ILL WILL: State of the mind that provides negative emotions. A dislike about an object, a situation or a person. If you dislike something, You must learn to let go of Ill Will. One of the reasons I’ve watched this video 5x today, is during my day today, I got stuck getting irritated with a situation at work. I did the Shaolin Qi Gong for an hour. Meditated 3 times and took a walk. These all aided me to get rid of my ILL Will. But after writing this I will do one more thing, Yoga Nidra. Some days, it’s just harder to get peaceful. Today was one of those days for me. But I took action and am almost at peace. I know I should just say, Peace is within me now and be done with it. That’s supposed to work from all that I teach and think. Just sometimes, you or I need to do more to chase the Ill Will away
  3. DULLNESS/HEAVINESS: Sleepiness, lack of energy, non motivation, can manifest into depression. You feel imprisoned. And it it hard to make a mental or physical decision. You need to Find a way to get out of this state of mind
  4. RESTLESSNESS: An unsettled mind that worries about the future or travels to the past. This is the monkey mind. Jumping around from past to future without staying long enough in the present moment. Try not to judge things and get out of this state of mind
  5. SKEPTICAL DOUBT: Indecisiveness. Lost in thoughts. Can I do this? What will people think? Is this the right path? You may have many doubts and get stuck instead of moving on. Too much doubt will get you stuck. Get Out and feel decisive, positive and free

What to do about the 5 Hindrances. Prevent them from arising. Use techniques to rid yourself of them. In other videos Shi Heng Yi teaches various movements of the body while breathing. Meditation is also good, so is doing a hobby like sewing, painting and sports. These keep your mind calm and in the present moment. One does not need to do real mediation (but it does help). You can do your hobby and it will work very well also. Or of course you can mix the 2 options. I personally do the Calm app SOS, Yoga Nidra, Kirtan, write, read, walk, play basketball and sometimes paint and surf.

4 Things to do about the 5 Hindrances

  1. Recognize: What state of mind you are in
  2. Accept: Learn to accept how a situation is, why people are like this. Allow things to be how they are, let people be as they are. You can not change them. but you can change how you perceive them. Stay calm when faced with verbal bullying. Learn martial arts for physical attacks.
  3. Investigate: Your emotional and mental state and question it. Ask questions? Why? What will be the consequence when I stay like this
  4. Non Identify: It is the practice. I am not the Body, I am not the Mind, I am not my Emotions. I can see these 3 aspects about me, but they are not me. I am a spiritual being living in a human body

Be Unique. Try not to copy others. Bring meaning to your life. Learn and master yourself and don’t let the hindrances stop you. Learn to live a healthy life. Healthy Body and Healthy Mind

Three Main Things to Do:

  1. Physical Movement Qi Gong, Kung Fu, Martial Arts
  2. Intention of the Mind/Mind action/control
  3. Learn How to use your Breathe

I know it’s a lot of words today, take what works for you and leave the rest on the page. Or watch the video and formulate your own plan. Today, I needed to do what I like to do to get our of a hindrance. And that is to write and to hopefully help someone else on their journey.

For more on Shi Heng Li, check out his website here

Here is the Mind, Body and Soul exercise session that I did today to help me get out of Ill Will. It helped but did upset my back a bit, so be careful when doing any of the various trainings. Glad I didn’t try the Kung Fu today.

Challenges Come & Go

The Guest House by Rumi

This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still, treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing,
and invite them in.

Be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.

Sufi Mystic & Poet, Rumi wrote the Guest House all the way back in the 13th Century. Today it was on the Daily Calm 7/25/21. It reminds us that when challenges come our way, they will pass through and go away. Tomorrow is a Brand New Day. Actually your next moment in time is brand new, it’s up to you, to do what is needed to stay calm, centered and peaceful.

This past Friday, I was complaining to my spiritual teacher about some money issues. He actually got pretty pissed off, because of all that has been taught to me and reminded me to Meditate. (And never speak of lack, because our subconscious minds Don’t differentiate your positive or negative thoughts. So its best to think in abundance).

My instructions for the week were to meditate every evening for 3 minutes. I just did 3 days in a row at 2 x 12 minutes cycles per day. The meditation brings calm, peace and is good for overall health and wellness.

Rumi even goes on to tell us that some challenges, may just be stepping stones to bigger and better opportunities to come our way. Today’s challenge, will be tomorrows victory!

When things feel rough and tumble, take a moment and meditate. It may feel difficult at first, but the more you do it, the more peace meditation will provide.

Some Tips: The Daily Calm app provides a new meditation every day. It only takes 10-12 minutes. This app is my favorite. And it has an emergency SOS meditation, that I do when work feels like it’s too frantic and frustrating. I would recommend the Daily Calm App.

Or go on YouTube and choose a guided meditation. There are so many to choose from. Something for every challenge, difficulty or dilemma.

It’s in the silence that our best ideas are produced. There’s no right or wrong way to meditate. I would recommend to “Just Do It” Daily if you can. Don’t even worry about sitting perfectly or anything like that. Just close your eyes, listen and breathe.

I’m actually still a bit wound up from this past week and will stop writing and dial up another meditation. This time, my 2nd all time favorites-Yoga Nidra by Brenda Kwon. No matter how many house mates invade my brain, Yoga Nidra is a great go-to stress reliever. Try and do 20-45 minutes if you can. I guarantee Yoga Nidra will work. I even did it at the dentist one time and didnt even feel the new tooth being inserted into my mouth.

Yoga Nidra, The Daily Calm and even the quick and effective SOS will provide relief for whatever it is your mind thinks is happening. Remember, it is us that chooses our thoughts, not our boss, partner or surroundings. Give Meditation a try. Be Grateful to be alive. It’s a precious gift we are given.

You Always Have a Choice

As of today (Friday 6/4/21) I can claim that I have the worst backache in my entire life. But that won’t do be any good in healing it. I need to think thoughts of healing and health. Not only do I need to think these thoughts, but I need to say them out loud. The quickest affirmation I use personally is “I am 100% Healthy Right Now”. I said this many times daily during the pandemic and even simple as it is, it works. I say it even more times today as I heal my body into complete health and wellness

I also take action to improve my health to optimal performance. I apply ice to my back for 20 minutes, then I heat it for 20 minutes all day everyday. I take the healing efforts as close the NBA level as I can. I take turmeric, eat fruits + vegetables + anti-inflammatory foods, drink lots of water and take a bit of medicine. But mainly I think my way to perfect health. I have a choice to dwell on the pain or take action to improve my well being with positive, health filled thoughts

FILLING MY MIND WITH PLEASANT THOUGHTS IS THE QUICKEST ROAD TO HEALTH – Louise Hay –

When I feel myself going the wrong way, I turn to Eric Butterworth’s You Always have a Choice video. Butterworth was a Unity Minister and new thought teacher for over 30 years. And he says the number one thing he would like to let the world know is, You Always have a Choice

Here is the video for reference. Or you can read his thoughts and mine below the video if you are in a hurry.

Eric Butterworth’s Highlights of the video above: (I’m sure I added a few things here and there, but that’s ok. Its all good, just adding to the Good Vibes attitude of Today’s healing choice filled energy)

  • One simple Idea. The most important insight is Y0u Always have a Choice. There is no such thing as a choice-less Life
  • Things may happen around you or to you. But you Always have a choice to how you react to your surroundings. Choose to be Positive, Happy and Calm
  • You can’t regulate the weather, but you have a choice on how your react to it. If it rains, bless the plants, think of the drinking water the rain provides. You don’t have to complain about the rain.
  • If someone gets under your skin. You let them do it to you. You can Always choose not to let them inside your thoughts. You can hate or you can Love, you can choose which to do.
  • The incident is external, but the reaction is internal. And it is for you to choose. Reminder: It is Always your choice to choose your own thoughts.
  • He made me mad! No he did not! You Chose to be Mad. Don’t let others decide that you are mad! Stay calm, think peaceful loving thoughts.
  • Life without emotion has no zest. But watch your emotions and change them to good thoughts. We can correct the situation. You are not your emotions. You control your emotions. Don’t let them get out of control. You Always have a choice
  • No matter how bad things may seem. You can Always turn on the LIGHT. Choose to turn the Light on now
  • Age-Education-The Economy-Disease: Whatever is is that you are thinking, you can Always change your thoughts. Change a minus into a positive. Color your thinking with the Colors that you choose
  • Don’t react with hostility. It just brings more negatives. Choose to stay calm. You Always have a Choice!
  • Smile, be happy, enthused and Loving
  • Do you worry about money? Like you don’t have a choice? You do have a choice. Don’t worry, Bless what you do have. Be in the flow of substance. Like the vast ocean, there is a limitless abundance of wealth to be found by you, if not today, tomorrow. You can choose abundance over lack
  • All things work together for the Good. Remember Good is God and God is Always Good
  • Consciousness can Always be changed. Choose your attitude. Choose your mood. Rise above. Sit on Top of the World. No matter what happens in and around you, all that matters is what you think within your own mind. You Always have a Choice. Good, bad, Happy, sad. Choose wisely. Choose Good over evil. Faith over fear, Love over hate. You do have options. Live in the flow of God and the Good. Remember you ALWAYS have a choice and the choice is yours and only yours to make, and As Wham would say: Choose Life

Box Breathing

Quick and Easy Steps to Calm Down using Square Box Breathing

A Practice used in High Stress occupations including the Navy Seals

How to do box breathing

  1. Set a timer for five minutes
  2. Sit with a straight spine on the floor or in a chair with your feet flat
  3. Close your eyes and inhale for a count of four
  4. Hold your breath for a count of four
  5. Exhale for a count of four
  6. Hold for a count of four
  7. Repeat until the alarm sounds

The above are the standard instructions. I wouldn’t worry about the sitting with a straight spine. If it’s uncomfortable, please don’t do this. The Goal is not to hurt yourself. As long as you do this anywhere anytime, it does work. The feet on the floor does help with grounding. I also envision a warbled rectangle when I do it.

It is upon the exhale that calmness is Achieved

– Huna Das-

I do like this exercise and do know it works. I have 3 emergency go to’s when things get too stress-full. Box Breathing, The 4 minute Meditation SOS on the Calm App, or exercising. I find it harder to exercise but when I do it, its like Magic. Try a brisk 10- 20 minute walk or 40 minute basketball session. Any movement really does work. Yoga, walking, sports, a quick 20 minute YouTube Video. I’ve found the people at HasFit on YouTube work well for me. They have Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced 20-40 minute one on one classes.

If I have 30-50 minutes, I will do a Yoga Nidra Session. But if you do this, make sure you have a timer/alarm set or you may drift off into sleep.

The goal is not to get your stress too that high in the first place. But when it does, you’ll want to have some quick, go to Tools that will help you recover quicker.

What do you do when the stress gets turned up to 8, 9 or 10?

Freeze your Fear

Fight, Flight. Or Freeze it Away

F-E-A-R=False Evidence Appearing Real…But when your brain believes it to be real, it can be scary. Which brings your body back to the caveman days. So many, many, many years ago when the Big Mammal came to attack, you either Fought it (Fight) or took off running as fast as you could (Flight or Flee).

Nowadays in January 2021, some things may come your way, where you feel fearful and feel it’s time to Fight or Flee. There’s various ways to help you with the Fear factor. In this Soulution, we look at The Wim Hof Method.

Wim Hof’s wife committed suicide in 1995, the father of four was completely paralyzed by fear of the future. He experimented with various methods and landed on controlling his breath and focusing his mind to overcome extreme cold temperatures. By doing this, when his body felt fear, he was able to “scare” it away since he had effectively trained his mind not to freak out when cold temperatures came his way, he was able to use it in other situations to stay C-A-L-M in the face of FEAR.

Try the Two-Minute Method

The Goal is to take a very cold shower for Two-Minutes. Temperature should be under 60 degrees. I’d suggest just using only the Cold water, but depending where you live, you may need to add a tad of the Hot. Where I live in Hawaii, the Cold isn’t that cold, so I will try 100% cold water.

The method says to start your shower as normal with warm water. Then spray your feet, then legs and Immerse more from there. Try the full immersion at :10 or :15 seconds building up to :30 seconds. You’ll want to do the full immersion target of Two-Minutes to effectively use this method. Wim Hof says you’ll want to do the Two-Minutes for 5 days a week for 4 weeks. This, along with some breathing techniques, will train your mind to take over the Fight or Flight response.

With Success at the Two-Minute Cold Shower 5 days a week for 4 weeks, you will feel empowered to face fear in other situations. And from what Added Bonus: I’ve read and heard, the cold showers should help improve your immune system. Just be careful when trying this method of improving your life. A gradual process is probably best. I’ve never done this before, but am willing to give it a try. How Bout you? Wanna give it a go? Or let us know how you deal with fear in your life, give us a suggestion or Two in the comments Section.

Here’s a helpful video on safety tips on taking these cold showers:

Here is the “Iceman” telling first hand the method and the various things that the Cold Shower will help you with:

Look for the Good

The NBA in Action on Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Yesterday (1/18/21) NBA TV and TNT broadcasted five non-stop basketball games, to honor Martin Luther King Jr. throughout the day. It was a well deserved celebration of sports, human rights and yesterday & today’s culture.

The Story

The fifth game of day came down to the Los Angeles Lakers vs their arch rival, the Golden State Warriors. During the first half of the game and into the 3rd quarter, the Warriors super sharp shooter, Stephen Curry, could not make a three point basket. Well he did hit a few, but far less than usual.

The announcers kept saying Shooters Shoot, so Steph kept shooting the three’s. In the 4th quarter with just minutes to go, he hit a bomb of a three from way past the 3 point line-SWOOSH!. Then he dribbled down the court and missed an easy lay-up. Lakers got the ball one last time, but because of Steph’s three, they were still in the lead. Game ended with the Warriors winning 115-113 against the World Champion Los Angeles Lakers.

Look for the Good

It’s here after the game that we see how it can be a challenge to keep our minds positive and to look for the good. Steph Curry reluctantly jogged down to the post game interview. Looking bummed out, shaking his head back and forth, for sure upset with himself. The announcer said, I know that look, you missed the lay-up. Steph said Yep. BUT THEN, he said something very similar to this: Yep, I’m bummed I missed that..Oh, lets focus on the POSITIVE and RE-FRAME my answer. I did hit the long three Pointer and we won the game.

Just like you and I, professional Athletes don’t just play the physical game but the mental game. Steph Curry caught himself on National TV about to say something Negative and in the moment told us all, the Positive. Sometimes, things may not come out as planned, are not perfect or really do feel bad. Stop, Breathe, Re-Focus/Re-Frame your thoughts. And Look for the Good in every situation that may occur.

Stop, Breathe, Re-Focus/Re-Frame your thoughts. And Look for the Good in every Situation that may occur-Huna Das

It takes effort and persistent. And no one is perfect. If you Look for the Good most of the time. That’s quite alright. It’s just something to be aware of and to try your best.

It was pretty amazing watching the Look for the Good spiritual Soulution in action, on TV after a hard fought NBA Basketball Game.

As my Mom would say: Look for the Good and See the Miracles.

Have a Positive, Powerful, Peaceful Day!

Mohini the Tiger

The Story

There once lived a regal white tiger named Mohini. This tiger lived in a 12 x 12 foot cage with metal bars and a concrete floor. Mohini spent the day walking back and forth, back and forth within the 12 foot container of space she lived in.

Someone felt bad for this sad tiger and built her a 2 acre parcel of land. A new expansive land complete with luscious vegetation, rolling hills and various ponds to play in. They moved Mohini to this land so that she could live out her years roaming free with excitement and Joy, in this great big land of plenty.

What does the regal white tiger do? Mohini the tiger found an area she liked and walked back and forth and back in forth, in an exact 12 foot area, the same size as her cage. She walked on this small grassy area so much, the grass turned to dirt.

Photo by Andrea Piacquadio on Pexels.com

The Teaching

It was too late for Mohini to change. She was stuck in her ways. You could even call it stuck in a rut. You too may feel this way sometimes. I feel this way at times, but as soon as I change my mind towards something greater, my life changes for the better.

In today’s Covid Times, it’s even easier to stay in your 12 x 12 foot cage. Maybe at the same job you’ve been doing for 10, 20 or even 30 years because you feel its safe, secure and pays you well. But this same safe job you are in, may not even exist in 6-12 months. The world is changing and it’s changing FAST. The world we knew, will never be the “same”. Different, better, more social – YES, but never will it be the same.

There is never the Best, or correct or exact time to make a change. Whenever it feels right for you, make that change. Try something new. Go on a dating site. Change your job. Move to Ibiza. Whatever it is, you can do it and you can do it today. Don’t wait for Covid to end or the world to get “better”. The world between your two ears is already better.

Think abundant thoughts, eat healthy meals, go out of the house and smell the flowers, take a dip in the Ocean. If you can’t physically do any of these. Do it with your imagination and with your Mind. Your mind is extremely powerful. You can think yourself sad and just as easily think yourself GLAD.

Photo by Julius Silver on Pexels.com

Don’t be Mohini. Get our there and seize the day with Excitement, Zest and Happiness. Just think, you could have been born a tiger in a 12 x 12 cage or even an ant or a cockroach. You were born a human. Which gives you the Power to do and be whatever you want. Conceive, Believe and Achieve. Take charge and go out there and get what your heart desires.

As a Man thinketh, So is he, and as a man chooseth, so is he – Ralph Waldo Emerson

Editor of this blog post: Man/Woman He/She

It is never too late to make a change. Excuses and boundaries in your brain can keep you in your cage. Or you can decide to live in the greater, more joy filled, great big expanse of the 2 acre land, and beyond.

Secure your Mind

No One or Nothing can Make you feel Bad or Mad – Huna Das

You are in charge of your emotions at all Times. Use your Divine Mind to stay of sound mind at all Times.

If the boss reprimands you with a certain tone or your partner raises their voice towards you. Stay strong, envision a beach, a grassy hill, or fragrant flowers. Do not let the fury of anyone affect your Peace! No one or Nothing can Make you feel Bad or Mad. You control your state of Mind. Outside forces can not mess with your inside feelings without your permission.

Example:

One day my 2 friends were yelling at each other, it escalated to a bit of a tousle, then some crying, leaving one of the 2 very upset. He said that SHE gets me so angry and upset. I said to him: No one can affect your mood except yourself. He didn’t agree and said that his friend caused him to be mad and become upset. I repeated it again, No One can make you mad. Only YOU can make yourself Mad.

The Teaching:

This is one of the most trickiest spiritual themes to master in the World. It takes practice and patience. But once you get it, life can and will be more peaceful for you.

You may feel your body and brain Anger-Up when someone is yelling at you. Imagine putting an imaginary clear or colored shield up in front of you. The screams and yells, can NOT come in. Unless YOU Crack the screen. Don’t let your screen crack, crinkle or disappear. When you feel attacked verbally, Using your imagination, Keep a strong, powerful screen in front of your body. Don’t let anyone’s anger affect you. Don’t crack your screen.

No one or nothing from outside sources can make you Sad, Happy, Glad or Anxious. You control your thoughts and your thoughts create how you feel. Outside forces can not get in unless you let them. You control your reality!

Affirmations

While watching the exact same TV Show, A person can feel Sad just as easily as a person can feel happy. You create your inner TV screen, Think thoughts of Happiness, Joy and Peace. Or if it’s easier for you, carry around a short affirmation card in your pocket. Use your own words to create it, make it your own. Example: No One or Nothing can affect my Mood today, I control my own Mind at all times. Right now, I am Happy, I am Safe, I am Calm and I feel Great!

AFFIRMATION EXAMPLE:

No one or Nothing can affect my Mood today, I control my own Mind at all Times. Right now, I am Happy, I am Safe, I am Calm and I feel Great!

-Huna Das-

Breathe

The next time someone cuts you off in traffic or yells at you for “messing” up at work. Go to your happy place, put up your shield or just B-R-E-A-T-H. When I’m not around people I like to practice square box breathing. Drawing a box/rectangle in my mind using my breathe. It’s a little hard to do when people are in front of you. But you can do it, do it slowly calmly and envision the box with your imagination. Slowly inhaling through your nose 4 counts up. Hold 6 counts across. Exhale 4 more counts down and another 4 counts to the left to complete your box. Repeat. Or even easier, if you find yourself about to get upset, take a moment and slowly inhale 4 counts, hold 6 counts and exhale 8 counts. This would be the SOS method. Try either of these and see how they work. Make sure you exhale slow and long, that’s where the magic happens.

When commotion feels like its coming your way, Relax, stay peaceful , calm and Don’t react. Act with positive thoughts and use your shield. Or use your imagination and go to your favorite place..beach, park, ocean, or even a snow covered mountain. Use your affirmation card and remember to breathe calmly and slowly.

No one or nothing can make you upset except for you. You control your thoughts at all times. Not just when things are good, but when you think they are bad, they really don’t need to be. Always remember no outside force can make you mad. Be Diligent, Be Patient + Practice. It’s not always easy to feel good, calm, or peaceful, BUT it is 100% possible. Only you can make yourself GLAD!

*Yes, I am aware that I repeated myself a few times. That was purposeful. Because this is such a hard theme to believe. It may take you a day, a month or even years to learn and use this consistently. Once mastered, It will change your life.

No one or nothing can affect your mood except for you. Still not sure? Here are a couple quotes to help reinforce this blog post. You can even make an affirmation card out of them if that works for you. Please leave questions or suggestions in the comments section.

I say out to every negative thought that comes to my mind. No person, place or thing has any power over me. For I am the only thinker in my mind. I create my own reality. – Louise Hay

It isn’t the world that makes you unhappy or the way people are in the world. It’s how you process the people and events of the world. – Wayne Dyer
